It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas… And for most of us, that means snuggling up in front of a roaring fire to watch our favorite Christmas movie.
But which countries have the most Christmas movie fans and love nothing more than to spend a cold winter’s (or even summer’s!) night watching one of their favorites? And which countries have such avid Christmas movie fans that they’re tuning in way before the festive period starts?
Using Ahrefs, we’ve compared the search volumes for Christmas movies across 92 countries to find out. We used popular search terms such as “Christmas movies” and “Christmas films” as well as local variations (see our methodology for more details). Then, we analyzed these against the number of internet users in the country to find out how many searches per 100,000 internet users were being carried out each month.
The top 10 Christmas movie fans overall
Which country has the most Christmas movie fans overall?
According to the search volumes per 100,000 internet users, Hungarians are the biggest Christmas movie fanatics with over 4,800 searches per 100,000 internet users.
Here are the full top 10 standings:
- Hungary – 4,822 searches per 100,000 internet users
- Malta – 4,484 searches per 100,000 internet users
- Iceland – 3,087 searches per 100,000 internet users
- Trinidad and Tobago – 2,805 searches per 100,000 internet users
- Ireland – 2,362 searches per 100,000 internet users
- Bulgaria – 2,317 searches per 100,000 internet users
- UK – 1,834 searches per 100,000 internet users
- Guyana – 1,833 searches per 100,000 internet users
- Czech Republic – 1,746 searches per 100,000 internet users
- Lithuania – 1,674 searches per 100,000 internet users
It’s perhaps no surprise that the majority of these searches come in the month of December. But there is one country that doesn’t follow the “norm.”
In the US, festive movie searches are at their highest in November with 720 searches per 100,000 internet users (compared to a lowly 230 searches per 100,000 internet users in December).
The top 10 countries by total Christmas movie search volume

- United Kingdom – 1,168,565 searches for Christmas movie keywords
- Germany – 694,721 searches for Christmas movie keywords
- Canada – 522,894 searches for Christmas movie keywords

Battle of the Christmas favorites
When looking at each country’s search for Christmas movie keywords, we could also see what other Christmas-related movies they were talking about. And there were two clear favorites — Home Alone and Love Actually.
Globally, there are around 14.4 million searches for Home Alone each year. This is closely followed by around 10.6 million searches for Love Actually each year. But which is most popular where?
While the majority of countries favor one of the two must-see festive faves, there are a handful that prefer something a little different. For example, residents in the Bahamas and Hungary clearly believe Die Hard IS a Christmas movie as it’s the top pick there, while Malaysians love another hugely popular Christmassy pick, The Holiday.
Methodology
Using Ahref’s keyword explorer we searched various keywords in numerous languages to create totals for each of the 92 countries studied. Those not included did not have any data available (total search volumes may have been available but without a full monthly breakdown). Every country was searched for each keyword to ensure all of the languages spoken there were covered. For example, in the US, search volumes were available in English, Spanish, and Russian.
We then compared the search volumes to the number of internet users in the country. This helped us to create a fair comparison by country (e.g. to remove just finding high search volumes in highly populated countries, such as the United States).
The monthly data corresponds to estimated search volumes throughout 2020.
