PureVPN not working with SlingTV? We’ve got solutions

PureVPN not working with SlingTV?

SlingTV is one of the best TV streaming platforms available today. It’s an excellent service, but there’s a caveat; SlingTV can only stream content within the United States. Even with a valid SlingTV subscription, you cannot access the service outside the US. But, not to worry, there are ways to get around that limitation. Many people bypass location restrictions by using a VPN to watch SlingTV.

Not all VPN providers support SlingTV and other streaming sites, but many of them do, and PureVPN is one of them. There are, however, occasional issues that crop up when trying to connect to Sling TV, but there are easy fixes for them which we’ll explain here.

So If you’re having trouble accessing SlingTV while using PureVPN, don’t worry; we’re going to fix that. This post explains how to get SlingTV working with PureVPN.

Why isn’t PureVPN letting me access SlingTV?

SlingTV’s agreement with rights holders limits its broadcast rights to the United States. So SlingTV is legally compelled to restrict the availability of its service (geo-block) in any country other than the United States. This isn’t specific to SlingTV. Most, if not all, legal streaming services are bound by similar terms.

Once connected to a PureVPN server in the United States, your “real” ISP-assigned IP address is changed to a US IP address. After that, whenever you access a site or service over the internet, your device’s traffic will appear to be coming from the US, and if all goes well, you’ll be able to stream Sling TV from any location. Keep in mind that accessing streaming sites over VPN will typically involve a little bit of trial and error.

If you’re having issues accessing SlingTV over PureVPN, there’s a good chance it’s for one of the reasons below.

Common reasons why PureVPN isn’t working Sling TV:

  • The PureVPN server to which you’re connected is not located in the United States. This is crucial. Unless you connect to a US-based VPN server, you will not be able to access SlingTV from outside the US.
  • SlingTV is aware that your IP address belongs to a VPN server, and in accordance with its terms of service, it has blocked your connection.
  • SlingTV may have placed a cookie in your app or browser. Cookies may reveal your actual location to streaming services. If your device hosts one of these cookies, SlingTV has likely blocked your connection after inferring your actual location.
  • You may be leaking DNS, exposing your ISP’s (non-US) DNS servers’ IP address(es). ISPs typically assign their DNS servers to customers by default. Unless those servers have a US IP address, SlingTV won’t play nice with them, and your connection will be blocked.

How to fix PureVPN not working with SlingTV

The good news is that these issues are easily resolved through a bit of troubleshooting. Just follow the simple steps below.

Here’s how to fix PureVPN not working with SlingTV:

  1. You need to make sure you’re connected to a US-based VPN server. If you’ve double-checked and know you’re connected to a US server, then you should try a different server (US-based again). The US IP address of the first US server you tried may have been identified as a VPN server by SlingTV and blocked.
  2. Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
  3. Try enabling private/incognito mode in your browser. You can also try a different web browser.
  4. Run a DNS leak test to make sure you’re not suffering from a DNS leak.
  5. PureVPN supports split tunneling in its Windows app. Split tunneling allows you to select which applications go through the VPN tunnel and which go through your ISP gateway. If you’re using Windows, ensure the feature is either disabled or you haven’t configured your browser/app to go through your ISP gateway. These settings are found in PureVPN’s app.
  6. Restart your device.
  7. Restart the PureVPN app.

If all else fails, consider trying a different VPN provider, such as NordVPN, the provider we recommend above all others.

PureVPN & SlingTV: FAQs

Which are the best VPN providers to stream SlingTV?

Not all VPNs support streaming sites. Some provide extensive support and work with just about every streaming site available, others support just a handful, and many don't support any streaming services at all. So you want to choose a VPN service that explicitly states its support of streaming sites. Below are some of the VPN providers we recommend:

  • NordVPN: NordVPN is one of the best VPNs for streaming in general and SlingTV in particular. It provides excellent privacy, security, and speeds to its customers. It also supports practically every streaming service you can think of.
  • Surfshark: Surfshark is another VPN provider that provides a great streaming experience. It's also one of the cheapest subscriptions you can find for a reputable VPN service. Surfshark offers low prices, extensive streaming support, and a large VPN network with many servers to choose from.
  • ExpressVPN: Another VPN provider we highly recommend for streaming and more is ExpressVPN. Its privacy and security practices are excellent, and it supports most streaming sites too.
  • CyberGhost: CyberGhost is another good choice. It offers fantastic streaming support at a fair price and is easy to use for beginners.
  • IPVanish: IPVanish may not be as well-known as other VPN providers on our list, but it plays well with many streaming sites and also allows for unlimited simultaneous connections.

What can I watch with SlingTV?

SlingTV offers a huge selection of live TV shows and on-demand content. Below are some of the available channels:

Are there any free VPN services that work with SlingTV?

There will likely be a few, but there won't be very many. Even if you were to find a free VPN that works, the vast majority of free VPNs tend to have very small server networks. Large portions of their users will be using the same VPN servers. That's going to increase the odds of their IP address getting blocked by streaming services. When a large amount of traffic comes from the same IP address, internet services will deduce that a VPN (or a proxy server) is being used. You should also keep in mind that most free VPNs have poor speeds and questionable security practices, so we usually don't recommend them.

How does SlingTV know I'm using a VPN?

SlingTV can infer you're using a VPN when it gets your IP address. You're assigned an IP address when you go online, whether using a VPN or not. That's also how VPNs manage to spoof your location - they simply change your IP address

VPN server IP address lists are available for streaming services to use as deny lists. SlingTV is legally compelled to deny connections from IP addresses known to belong to VPN servers. So it's safe to argue that it uses these lists in its day-to-day activities.

Will using a VPN slow down my connection?

It will. And there's nothing you can really do about that. When you connect to a VPN, the VPN server is an extra hop your traffic needs to make to reach its destination, as it sits between your device and the internet. That translates into latency and slows down your connection. Additionally, when using a VPN, all your traffic must be encrypted and decrypted. So a slowdown is going to be inevitable. But a good VPN provider will be able to limit the slowdown to the point of not being very noticeable. You want to be sure to choose a reputable VPN provider that can limit your speed hit.

Can I install PureVPN on my router instead of using the app?

Only a subset of VPN providers supports routers. But PureVPN is part of that group. It provides a native app for DD-WRT routers and detailed instructions for manual setup on other routers. As a third option, you can buy a pre-configured VPN router with PureVPN already set up.

Setting up a VPN connection on your router provides you with two significant benefits:

  1. You won't need a dedicated app to connect your devices to the VPN. You just need to connect to the router, and your traffic will be tunneled through the VPN.
  2. You can bypass your VPN provider's limit on simultaneous connections (PureVPN limits this to a generous ten simultaneous connections). With the VPN configured on the router, you can connect as many devices as you like to your router, and it only counts as a single connection from your provider's perspective.

Have a look at our guide on VPN routers if you'd like more information on the subject.

Is it legal to use a VPN to watch SlingTV?

Yes, it's perfectly legal. There's nothing illegal about connecting to a VPN server to access the internet. But while it's legal, that doesn't mean it's allowed by SlingTV's terms of service. Indeed SlingTV's terms of service state that SlingTV should only be accessed from within the United States. So if the service suspects you of trying to access SlingTV from outside the United States with a VPN, it will likely block your connection. It's unlikely that SlingTV would ban your account for trying to connect from outside the US. But it will have no qualms with blocking your connection.

Does PureVPN keep any logs?

In 2017, PureVPN was caught handing over VPN logs to law enforcement despite stating that it collected no logs. Since then, however, it changed its practices and privacy policy to clarify that it now does not collect any logs. It may remain off-putting to some that it acted in this way. But it has since undergone an independent audit to back its claims. So, the answer is that PureVPN does not keep logs today, and your online activities are safe with this provider.

You can look at our complete PureVPN review for more details.

Will my ISP know if I'm using a VPN?

Yes, your ISP will know you're using a VPN. And because everything is happening over your ISP's network, there's simply no way to hide the following information from your ISP:

  • That you're using a VPN
  • The VPN provider
  • The port and VPN protocol you're using
  • Your connection times
  • Your consumed bandwidth

But there are benefits to using a VPN to gain a measure of privacy from your ISP. It won't see the following:

  • The websites you visit
  • The videos you stream
  • The files you download
  • Your DNS requests (as long as you're not leaking DNS).

Stay safe and stream on!
