Divergent didn’t get as much attention as it deserved, arriving on the scene a few years after The Hunger Games took the world by storm. That said, it’s still a well-loved series, with three movies and a dedicated fan following. Today, we’ll let you know how to watch the Divergent series online from start to finish, whether you’re in the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, or anywhere else. Depending on where you live, you might even be able to stream Divergent for free!
We’ll only be discussing official sources. Shady streaming sites tend to provide far lower-quality video, and there’s no guarantee the movies will be available for any real length of time. There are lots of fully-legal ways to stream the Divergent series though, rendering third-party streams effectively pointless.
Divergent and its sequels are only available on geo-blocked platforms. In other words, anyone traveling abroad will need a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to watch via their usual streaming services.
How to watch Divergent online from anywhere
VPNs shield your online activities from prying eyes by encrypting your data and sending it through a server somewhere else in the world. This also lets you spoof your location and regain access to your usual streaming services while traveling.
Follow these steps to watch the Divergent movies from abroad:
- Begin by signing up for a reputable VPN provider. We recommend NordVPN although Surfshark and ExpressVPN are two speedy, security-conscious alternatives with plenty to offer
- Download and install the VPN on any device you use for streaming. Most providers permit at least five simultaneous connections, so it’s fine if there are several
- Log in and connect to a server in your home country. This changes your IP address, which is what most streaming platforms use to find your location
- Visit your country’s Divergent broadcaster (see below) and try playing a video. It should start right away, but if not, we’ve found that clearing your cookies and refreshing the page fixes most problems.
- Still struggling to watch anything? We’d suggest contacting your VPN’s support team for more assistance. All of the providers mentioned above offer free 24/7 support, meaning you’re only ever a few minutes away from getting help
WANT TO TRY THE TOP VPN RISK FREE?
NordVPN offers a fully-featured risk-free 30-day trial if you sign up at this page. You can use the VPN rated #1 for streaming the Divergent movies with no restrictions for a full month. This is perfect for travelers looking to continue streaming the series while on a short vacation abroad.
There are no hidden terms—just let customer support know within 30 days if you decide NordVPN isn't right for you and you'll get a full refund. Start your NordVPN trial here.
How to stream the Divergent movies for free in the US
Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant are all available on Max (formerly known as HBO Max). When this service first launched, it offered a short free trial but this is no longer the case. Now, if you sign up through the website, you’ll have to pay $9.99 USD per month to watch with ads or $14.99 per month for an ad-free experience.
That said, there is a better option. Max can also be added to your Hulu or Amazon Prime Video account. The price is the same, but on these platforms, it includes a seven-day trial. Better yet, Hulu and Prime both have a trial of their own. As such, you can sign up, watch the Divergent movies, and simply cancel before you’re charged.
Max and Amazon Prime Video are both region-locked, so you’ll have to use a VPN to access the US library while traveling abroad. NordVPN works effortlessly with these platforms and comes with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee. If you’re not fully satisfied, just cancel during this window to receive a full refund.
Where else can I watch Divergent online?
Good news: it’s possible to stream all three Divergent movies from plenty of countries outside of the US. Take a look below to find out which platforms are showing Divergent where you live.
Canada
Canadians have plenty of ways to watch Divergent online. For starters, the whole series is available on Netflix Canada (which has plans starting at $5.99 CAD per month) and Amazon Prime Video ($9.99 monthly with a 30-day free trial everywhere except Quebec).
You can also sign in with your cable provider details and watch on Crave at no added cost. It’s technically possible to create a Crave account without cable but there’s really no benefit to this, since it costs the same as Prime and doesn’t offer a trial.
If you’d rather watch the Divergent series in French, all you have to do is sign up for Club Illico. This is $15 per month, with reduced rates for existing Helix TV and Illico TV customers.
All of the services are geo-blocked. In short, you’ll need a VPN to access them from outside of Canada.
UK
Once again, the easiest way to watch these movies is on Amazon Prime Video. Plans cost £8.99 per month but if you’re quick, you can take advantage of the 30-day trial to avoid paying at all. Alternatively, Now TV (£9.99 monthly) has the first two movies, and Lionsgate+ (£5.99 monthly) has the last two.
Remember: as these services are geo-restricted, you won’t be able to access their British content libraries from abroad unless you’re using a VPN.
Australia
Streaming the Divergent series in Australia couldn’t be simpler. That’s because Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant are all available on Prime Video, Paramount Plus, and Stan. These services all offer a free trial, so it really doesn’t matter which one you use. Just remember to cancel once you’re done watching so that you’re not charged.
If you’re abroad on vacation, you can regain access to these platforms by connecting to one of your VPN’s Australian servers.
Other locations
Didn’t see your country listed above? No problem! Here’s a quick rundown of other streaming platforms that currently offer the entire Divergent series:
- Germany: WOW (€7.98 EUR monthly), Cinema of Hearts Prime addon (seven days free, then €3.99 per month)
- Italy: Netflix Italia (plans from €5.49 monthly)
- India: Free with ads on MX Player
- Japan: Watch on Hulu (¥1,026 JPY monthly) or Lemino (¥990 per month). Note that in Japan, these films are called divergent, Divergent NEO, and Divergent Final
- Mexico: Lionsgate+ ($89 MXN per month after a seven day trial)
What is Divergent about?
The basic premise of Divergent is pretty straightforward. When you turn 16, you undergo a test to see which of the five classes of citizen you’re best suited for. The problem is that the main character, Beatrice, doesn’t fit neatly into any of these categories, making her “Divergent”. This is a major issue since this threatens the social hierarchy, but as we’ll soon see, the people in charge have much bigger threats to deal with.
Will there ever be a fourth Divergent movie?
The third movie, Allegiant, actually only adapts half of its source material. The second part was supposed to be released in 2017 but was unceremoniously canceled after Allegiant performed poorly at the box office.
Given that the movie adaptations ended on a cliffhanger, fans were understandably upset. Initially, there were plans to close off the story with a TV movie, but Starz later expanded this to include a pilot for a TV series called The Divergent Series: Ascendant. Unfortunately, the main cast weren’t interested in such a dramatic step down and Ascendant too, was canceled.
At the time of writing, there’s no indication that Divergent will be coming back any time soon. If you want to find out how the story ends, you’ll have to read the books.
Who stars in Divergent?
Divergent has quite a few familiar faces. Here’s a quick rundown of the main cast:
- Shailene Woodley (The Fault in Our Stars) as Beatrice Prior
- Theo James (The White Lotus) as Tobias
- Kate Winslet (Titanic) as Jeanine
- Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad) as Eric
- Ray Stevenson (Dexter) as Marcus
- Zoë Kravitz (The Batman) as Christina
- Maggie Q (Designated Survivor) as Tori
- Mekhi Phifer (8 Mile) as Max
- Tony Goldwyn (Oppenheimer) as Andrew Prior
